Understanding Furniture Tiers

The commercial furniture market divides into roughly three tiers. Value tier (HON, Groupe Lacasse, National, Offices To Go) offers functional products with shorter warranties (5-10 years) at the lowest price points. Mid-range (Haworth, Kimball, SitOnIt, 9to5 Seating) provides better materials, longer warranties (10-15 years), and more customization options. Premium (Steelcase, Herman Miller/MillerKnoll, Knoll, Humanscale) delivers the best engineering, longest warranties (12+ years, some lifetime), highest resale value, and the most extensive design options.

The tier that's right for you depends on more than budget. High-turnover spaces like call centers often do well with value-tier product that can be replaced every 5-7 years. Executive suites and client-facing spaces benefit from premium product that signals professionalism and lasts decades. Open-plan areas for knowledge workers are often best served by mid-range product that balances ergonomics and cost.

One nuance that surprises many buyers: mixing tiers is not only acceptable — it's smart. Put your budget into the seating (people sit 8+ hours a day) and save on desking and storage where the ergonomic impact is lower. A premium task chair with a mid-range desk is a much better investment than mid-range everything.

A Note on Pricing

The prices shown are list prices — the starting point, not what you should pay. Dealer discounts vary by manufacturer, order volume, and relationship, but expect 30-50% off list for most commercial orders. Government and education buyers with cooperative purchasing contracts (Sourcewell, OMNIA Partners, GSA) often get the deepest discounts. Always ask your dealer for a "net price" quote rather than accepting list.
